【Brown-Glazed Oil Lamp】
Ø4cm XH4cm
Late Qing Dynasty – Republican Period
Fengxi Kiln, Chaozhou, Guangdong
A small oil lamp used in the Chaoshan region. The central tube holds a wick above a reservoir of vegetable oil, while the raised foot provides stability. Covered with a lustrous brown glaze, it reflects the practical character of everyday folk ceramics. Fengxi kiln has been an important ceramic-producing center in Chaozhou since the Song period.
Such lamps were commonly placed on household altars and in ancestral halls as perpetual lights, while also serving as modest sources of domestic illumination. They offer a glimpse into the intertwined worlds of faith and daily life in southern China. Oil lamps function by burning oil drawn through a wick.
